Trails Open to Full Size Vehicles in Colorado

A list of full size routes in Colorado which hold a “trail” designation and information regarding Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Permits for plated vehicles.

In addition to the many miles of Off-Highway Vehicle trails and ‘roads open to all vehicles’, there are a number of Full Size Trails open for recreational travel in Colorado. Although these trails allow for full width vehicles, they differ from most BLM and U.S. Forest Service roads as they are designed for recreational, motorized use rather than simply for transportation. A Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Permit is therefore required on any licensed/plated vehicle that is used for recreation on these trails. This $25.25 permit must be displayed on any full size vehicle traveling these trails even if that vehicle has a currently registered license plate from Colorado or any other state.

Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) include:

  • Dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility-terrain vehicles (UTV)/side by sides (SxS), three wheelers and buggies, and;
  • Plated, street-legal vehicles, full-size 4 x 4s or plated motorcycles when operating on public lands on OHV designated TRAILS in Colorado.

The funds collected from the sale of these OHV permits is used to build, maintain, and ensure the continued access to these trails for motorized and non-motorized users. A list of full size routes which hold a ‘trail’ designation in Colorado can be found below. However, it is always recommended to contact the local land management office with questions regarding any specific trail and any current closures or restrictions that may be in place.

Off-Highway Vehicle Permits

This $25.25 permit must be displayed on any full size vehicle
traveling these trails for recreational use even if that vehicle has a
currently registered license plate from Colorado or any other state/
province. Permits are valid from date of purchase to March 31st of
year displayed.

OHV Permits can be purchased in person at the following locations:

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife – Public Offices
  • Off-Highway Vehicle / Powersports Dealerships
  • Any vendor linked to the CPW – Total Licensing System

For more information regarding Colorado OHV permits or to
purchase online, please contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife – OHV
Registration Unit, or visit the website below:

The following is a list of many of the most popular full size 4×4 routes in Colorado which are designated as trails on official use maps.

A Colorado OHV Permit or Registration MUST be displayed on all OHV’s (ATV’s, UTV’s, SXS’s, Dirt bikes, Rock Buggies) and licensed vehicles (4×4 full-sized and plated motorcycles) traveling these trails for recreation.
