KBPI Colorado Stimulus Package Round 3.5 at Rampart Range
Posted by Justin on October 11, 2009
Rampart Range, CO - A cold, snowy morning greeted the group of volunteers from the Rampart Range Motorized Management Committee (RRMMC) and from 106.7 KBPI as we assembled in the Flat Rocks parking area off Rampart Range Road. Well, I guess we didn’t have to worry about heat exhaustion, now did we? With about 15 volunteers and a handful of staff from the USFS South Platte Ranger District, the plan was to get an access point for ATV’s hardened out of the Flat Rocks staging area, dig some post holes, and re-route a 50″ trail into one of the re-graded parking areas.

As a few more people showed up, including Clifton Slay and one listener to KBPI, we split into two groups. The first group worked on placing concrete blocks at grade level coming off the 50″ route that follows along Rampart Range Road, into the Flat Rocks staging area. This was only mildly complicated by the slight dusting of snow and the 13* temperatures that froze the top few inches of soil. A lot of polaski work finally got through enough to get the blocks into place, and then backfilled to create a surface that will be less susceptible to rutting and erosion coming up the bank.

The rest of us went to another staging area that had recently been re-graded to dig post holes for the post and cable that will be going in soon. We got an “assembly-line” going of a couple people with polaskis breaking up the top layer and then a few coming in behind with post-hole diggers. We were able to dig almost 30 post holes in less than a couple hours, which left us time to go cut in the new 50″ re-route that comes up to the staging area from the east. After breaking down the established berm and getting rid of any dangerous stumps, we left the painted route to get ridden in, which probably won’t take long.

All-in-all, not a bad day up in Rampart. Much thanks to all the volunteers, RRMMC, KBPI, Clifton Slay, and the South Platte Ranger District.
