Report by Adam Pitchford, Stay The Trail Intern
Because of Friday afternoon traffic, it took me about 3 hours to get down to the trail head and I pulled in right about 5pm. When I pulled in I was the only person there, and with the exception of a few people stopping by to ask questions on their way up the road to the campsites and it was like that for most of the evening. Friday as I was setting up, I talked to about 5 different groups asking about maps or where to camp and they were all excited to know that Jon (Pfieffer, Pikes Peak Ranger District) would have MVUM copies the next day. I went for a short ride on the ATV up the main FS Road, but was only able to get about 2 miles before I realized it was low on gas. If I had more day light, I might have gone back to town for some gas because there was alot of potential to talk to groups who were at campsites up the road and might not other wise stop in at the parking lot where the trailer was.
Saturday morning I was set up by 8:00 but the parking lot was still completely dead. There were a few cars and a trailer that had been left at the parking lot as people went up to camp sites, but by morning I was the only one still at the trail head. Jon Pfieffer arrived just before 9 and we set a table up outside the trailer with MVUM’s and spark arrestor info. A little before 10am, about 20 riders from CMTRA came though on their way up the trail for the Dual Sport Ride that was part of the motorcycle rally in Woodland Park. Things started to pick up by about 11 as day users rolled into the parking lot, but multiple people mentioned how slow it was this weekend. Over all, I talked to about 30 different groups and everyone was excited about STT and more so to get a hold of a printed MVUM. As the rain clouds started to roll in, things slowed considerably by about 2. Jon had to take off about 2:30 and by 3:00 there were no new groups coming into the trail head. I pulled out of the parking lot about 4 which was a good thing because in Colorado Springs and all the way to Denver I hit one of the hardest rain storms I have seen in a while. I am glad I was not trying to break down in that hard of rain. Overall, I have to say that eveything went really well.
